Zurich City Council has decided to support the 2026 Ice Hockey World Championships with CHF 1.9 million. The police operations will not be charged to the organizers. The city is also donating the flagging of the city center to the Hockey World Cup.

However, the organizers will have to pay the normal rates for other services, such as waste disposal and energy. As the city council announced on Wednesday, the city is also not providing any guarantees. The event risk is borne by the organizing committee.

The city council based its contributions on the support that was actually intended for the Ice Hockey World Championships in 2020. At that time, the major sporting event was also supposed to take place with Zurich as the main venue. However, the World Championships were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

From May 15 to 31, 2026, the 16 best men's national teams will play for the world championship title. The main venue is Zurich, the second venue is Fribourg.

34 of the 64 matches will take place in the Swiss Life Arena in Altstetten, including all of the Swiss team's preliminary round matches, all quarter-final and semi-final matches as well as the match for third place and the final.
