The rail vehicle manufacturer Stadler has received an order from the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) and the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway (MGBahn). The contract covers the construction of 11 new meter-gauge locomotives.
The order is worth around CHF 100 million, as the companies jointly announced on Friday. The hybrid locomotives have four axles with single-axle drive and will be built in Bussnang. They can be operated on the construction sites of both railroads both via the overhead line and with diesel engines.
At RhB, eight vehicles will replace five older locomotives. The three additional locomotives are intended to shorten the intervention time in the event of disruptions.
The Matterhorn Gotthard Railway, in turn, is replacing three older service locomotives. The new Stadler locomotives will be used to clear snow from the Oberalp Pass, among other things.
