It will be white again in the lowlands on the 2nd Advent
The medium-term forecast looks good for snow fans - at least in the mountains to the north of the Alps, writes MeteoSwiss. By Sunday at the latest, and thus just in time for the 2nd Advent, significantly cooler polar air will be flowing in from the northwest on the back of a low pressure system. According to MeteoSwiss, the snow line will quickly drop below 1000 meters.
Snow is also expected on Monday, even at the lowest altitudes. At the same time, however, the supply of moisture and thus the intensity of precipitation will decrease. This means that only a few centimetres of snow will probably remain on the Central Plateau. In the mountains, on the other hand, you can hope for a load of powder snow on top thanks to accumulation effects.
Meanwhile, the European weather model ECMWF is forecasting "storm-like heavy snowfall" in central and southern Germany on Saturday morning. Within a few hours, up to 30 centimetres of fresh snow is possible in some areas.

On Wednesday it will snow down to the lowlands - the weekend will be stormy
The first week of December will bring very changeable and, from Friday, occasionally windy weather, writes "Meteonews" in a press release. This is due to a cold front moving through on Tuesday night, with further fronts to follow from Friday. The temperature level will fluctuate greatly.
Tomorrow Tuesday and until Thursday, air with varying degrees of humidity will flow into Switzerland in a north to north-westerly direction. At most, isolated showers are expected in the lowlands until Wednesday, and it will mostly remain dry. Along the Alps, it will initially be cloudy and wet on Tuesday, with occasional drops and flakes falling from around 800 to 1000 meters later in the day.
On Wednesday, flakes are to be expected from around 500 to 700 meters with the expected individual downpours, on Thursday it will be completely dry. In addition to lots of clouds, there will also be brief periods of sunshine from Tuesday to Thursday, especially in the lowlands. Temperatures will be around 5 to 6 degrees on Tuesday and around 3 to 4 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Friday and Saturday, storm lows will pass to the north of us. The associated disturbances will affect northern Switzerland in particular.
In the first half of the day on Friday, first a warm front and then a cold front will pass through with strong to stormy south-westerly to westerly winds at slightly higher altitudes. After calming down, the next fronts will follow on Saturday with strong to stormy south-westerly to westerly winds.
The snow line will go up and down on Friday and Saturday: it will temporarily rise to 1500 to 2000 meters on Friday night and then fall to around 1000 meters over the course of Friday. On Saturday, it initially rises to 2000 meters and just above, but then drops to around 500 meters by Sunday night at the latest, where it is likely to remain on Sunday. This means that wet flakes are also possible in the lowlands on Sunday.
The south will be less affected by the disturbances, in southern Ticino there will probably only be some precipitation on Sunday night.

There are 20 kilometers between Delémont and Grenchen - and 22 degrees
An unusual weather phenomenon occurred in Switzerland on Monday morning. There are almost 20 kilometers between Delémont JU and Grenchen SO. However, the temperature difference this morning was a whopping 22 degrees.
— MeteoSchweiz (@meteoschweiz) November 25, 2024The reason is a cold air lake, an accumulation of cold air in a depression in the ground, in Grenchen, which caused the local temperature to drop to -5 degrees. In Delémont, on the other hand, a foehn-like south-westerly wind was blowing and the temperature was 17 degrees, as MeteoSwiss writes on X.

After the delays caused by the heavy snowfall, Swiss Post's operations are back to normal. All shipments were able to be carried out again on Saturday, Swiss Post announced.
The delivery staff were also able to carry out their rounds again as normal, it added. The snowfall of the past few days had also taken its toll on Swiss Post. Due to the sometimes precarious conditions, it was unable to guarantee all collection and delivery services on Friday.
Customers therefore had to expect delays, it said. All regions in Switzerland were affected. However, operations on the PostBus routes had already returned to normal on Friday.

Bus and streetcar services back to normal in Basel
Bus and streetcar services in Basel returned to normal on Saturday night. All lines were running regularly again, Basel's public transport company announced on Saturday morning.
While on Thursday evening the main reason was roads and lines blocked by cars and branches, on Friday it was mainly parts of the overhead line covered in snow and ice that prevented a rapid resumption of services, as the Basel public transport company (BVB) also reported.
Thanks to the efforts of various people, the last streetcar lines were able to resume regular service late on Friday evening. The Basel bus network was able to gradually resume operations on Friday morning.

Bern streetcars gradually resume operation
The streetcars in the city of Bern are gradually resuming service. Two lines have been running as usual since Saturday morning, and two more should follow in the course of the morning.
The situation is different for two other lines. The Bahnhof-Fischermätteli section of line 6 and the Bahnhof-Saali connection of line 8 are expected to remain closed until Sunday, said Rolf Meyer from the Bernmobil transport company on Saturday when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency.
The heavy snowfall had put the streetcars out of action since Thursday evening. On Friday, they had to remain in the depot due to the large amounts of ice and snow. Replacement buses were in operation. Customers had to be patient.
The clearing work was more time-consuming than expected because a lot of snow had been pressed into the points. Branches had also damaged the overhead lines.

It should get warmer again on Sunday. According to initial forecasts, temperatures of up to 13 degrees are possible, writes Meteo News.

Due to the precarious snow conditions, almost all Bern streetcars will have to remain in the depot until Saturday. Only between Worb and Bern Bahnhof were streetcars on line 6 able to run again on Friday.
The other lines should have resumed service at 5 pm. This did not happen. Due to large amounts of ice and snow on the tracks, operations were suspended until the end of the day, Rolf Meyer from the Bernmobil transport company told the Keystone-SDA news agency.
Replacement buses have been organized. However, waiting times were to be expected. The bus network had slowly picked up speed again on Friday morning. By early afternoon, all bus routes were back in operation

Two dozen reported accidents were dealt with without the involvement of a police patrol, the St. Gallen cantonal police wrote in a press release. The main cause of the accidents was insufficient distance between the vehicles and inappropriate speed.
Some cars were found to be driving without winter tires. The road conditions were also difficult on Friday morning, warned the cantonal police.
There were also incidents because trees or branches could not withstand the snow and had to be removed from the roads. An overturned trailer also caused a two-hour closure of the A13 highway between Sargans and Trübbach early on Thursday evening, according to the St. Gallen cantonal police.

The Basel transport company is partially resuming bus services today. The streetcars in Basel are still not running for the time being after the onset of winter, as announced by the Basler Verkehrsbetriebe (BVB) early on Friday morning.

The first snow paralyzes traffic in many places
The first snowfall down to the lowlands caused traffic disruptions on Thursday. At the Gotthard, cars were temporarily unable to travel south. Flights and bus services were also affected. SBB also expected disruptions on Friday.
Already on Thursday afternoon, the Bernmobil transport company had to suspend bus services in the federal city. Streetcar line 3 was also taken out of service. The other streetcar lines were running as well as possible, as Bernmobil media spokesman Rolf Meyer told the Keystone-SDA news agency.
This meant that many commuters were forced to walk during rush hour. It happens occasionally in winter that the Bern buses have trouble on steeper sections during heavy snowfall and spin their wheels. On Thursday, bus services were temporarily suspended on the entire network - also for safety reasons. Later that evening, Bernmobil announced on X that it was "suspending operations on the entire route network with immediate effect". So there were no more streetcars running either.
There was also chaos on the roads in Zurich: Due to slippery snow and ice, the Zurich transport company also suspended bus services in the city and surrounding area towards the evening. The streetcar lines only ran irregularly. Passengers departing or arriving near a city train station were advised to use the S-Bahn.
Later in the evening, the Basel transport company also announced that it was suspending public transport services on buses and streetcars until the end of the day - for safety reasons. The weather conditions were "very precarious". Some points are icy or even frozen and can no longer be set. In addition, various gradients were no longer passable for buses. Several roads are also impassable due to blocked cars.

No getting through on the Gotthard
According to the TCS, the roads on the stretch between the Gotthard tunnel and Biasca TI were covered in snow in both directions. Driving conditions were difficult, it said. It was recommended to fit snow chains.
Shortly before 3 p.m., traffic on the A2 highway in the southbound direction had to be stopped due to the heavy snowfall and the snow removal work, as the Uri cantonal police wrote in a statement on Thursday evening. Traffic is now flowing again on the A2 southbound.
Due to the heavy snowfall, especially in the Uri Oberland, several reports of stuck vehicles have been received, according to the Uri cantonal police. The cantonal roads in Uri are passable. However, the section from Meien to Färnigen has been closed since 7 p.m. due to the risk of avalanches.
Some more snowfall is expected on Friday, the police wrote.

Rail traffic in Switzerland has been severely affected by the snowfall - for example due to overhead line disruptions, vehicle malfunctions or icy points. SBB is still expecting disruptions on Friday and intends to provide further information at 4.30 am. This was announced by SBB. SBB apologizes to customers for the inconvenience.
According to the statement, SBB is doing everything it can to rectify the disruptions as quickly as possible: "The operational teams are working all night to restore the infrastructure. Nevertheless, disruptions are still to be expected tomorrow."
Weather-related disruptions could occur despite preparations, it said. Particularly challenging for rolling stock and infrastructure are prolonged snowfall, freezing wet conditions or prolonged cold spells with sub-zero temperatures.

Basel's public transport operators suspend services
Nothing is working any more at the public transport company in Basel. As announced in the evening, operations will be suspended until the end of the day "for safety reasons". BVB has left it open as to whether streetcar and bus services can be resumed as planned on Friday morning.
"BVB regrets the current situation and is doing everything it can to ensure that public transport services can be resumed as quickly as possible," the statement said. Further details will be communicated on Friday morning, the BVB announced.
However, the "sometimes very precarious road and rail conditions" left no other choice. Switches are icy or frozen, and routes with steep gradients are also making bus travel difficult. In addition, there were always blocked cars in the way.

A "significant snowfall event for the end of November"
According to MeteoSwiss, a "significant snowfall event for the end of November" appears to be on the horizon, particularly in the central and eastern midlands and in north-western Switzerland. Heavy snowfall is expected on Thursday afternoon and evening and during the night into Friday.

According to MeteoSwiss, up to 40 centimetres are possible at altitudes above around 800 meters. Towards Schaffhausen and the Lake Constance region, the amounts should tend to decrease again.
In the transitional area between rain and snow, there could also be occasional grains of ice or, locally, possibly freezing rain.

Direction of the low pressure system is a guarantee for larger amounts of snow
According to Meteonews, the aforementioned direction of the low pressure system with an air mass boundary over Switzerland is a guarantee for large amounts of snow. Practically all record snow events in the lowlands have been caused by a similar weather situation. The prime example of this is March 5, 2006, when there was 53 centimetres of fresh snow in Zurich and 49 centimetres in Basel. Such extreme amounts of snow are not to be expected at the moment, but there are between 10 and 20 centimeters of fresh snow in German-speaking Switzerland.
