The average November temperature in Switzerland this year was 1.2 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 norm despite a brief onset of winter. As of Friday, the average temperature in Switzerland in November was 2.9 degrees Celsius.

November precipitation totals also remained "well below average" in large parts of Switzerland, as reported on the website of the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss) on Friday.

Meanwhile, the brief onset of winter last week led to local records for one-day snowfall totals. This was the case at a total of twelve measurement locations, according to the report. With 42 centimetres of fresh snow, Lucerne even recorded the highest November value in the series of measurements available since 1883. The next lowest value of 40 centimetres dates back to February 1962.

The amount of fresh snowfall in Basel was also comparably exceptional for the month of November - 27 centimetres fell here. According to MeteoSwiss, the previous November record from 1952 was only 14 centimetres.

On the southern side of the Alps, Locarno Monti TI also reported a November record with 15 centimetres of fresh snow in one day. The previous record of 14 centimetres was set in November 1947.
