A lifeguard was attacked and killed by a shark while surfing off the Hawaiian island of Oahu. A Honolulu emergency services worker, Shayne Enright, said the 49-year-old was attacked near Goat Island on Sunday afternoon.
Fire, police and emergency services responded to a 911 call from Malaekahana Beach on the North Shore of Oahu, where a caller reported a man with apparent shark bites. Lifeguards brought the man to the beach on a jet ski, according to Enright.
He was then pronounced dead there. Shark warnings were posted in the area after the attack. The victim had worked as a lifeguard in and around Honolulu since 2016. Mayor Rick Blangiardi described his death as a tragic loss.
