Liechtenstein voters pulled the plug on the country's public broadcaster Radio Liechtenstein at the ballot box on Sunday. A popular initiative to cut state funding for Radio Liechtenstein was approved.

According to the Liechtenstein government's voting website, 6786 voters voted in favor of the popular initiative by the small party Democrats pro Liechtenstein (DPL), while 5457 voted against. This corresponds to a 55.4 percent share of votes in favor. The voter turnout was 59.3 percent.

Radio Liechtenstein is mainly financed by public funds and is available to listeners free of charge. The Democrats were bothered by the fact that the station receives almost four million Swiss francs a year, 70 percent of all media funding, and has repeatedly had to be rescued with emergency loans.

With the appropriate specifications, such as a performance mandate, a private radio station could provide much more at a lower price.
