In principle, AI can make a positive contribution and offer opportunities in various areas of social life, according to the document that has now been published. "However, as in all areas in which humans are called upon to make decisions, the shadow of evil lurks here too."
AI harbors considerable risks and opportunities for abuse. Accordingly, AI could be used to generate and disseminate "manipulated content and false information" in order to "deceive or harm". AI-generated fake media could also undermine the foundations of society.
Vatican calls for "careful regulation"
In view of the dangers, governments and international organizations should work to ensure that AI is used for the good of all, according to the document "Antiqua et Nova" (Old and New). "This issue requires careful regulation, as misinformation - especially through AI-driven or influenced media - can spread unintentionally and fuel political polarization and social unrest."
At the same time, the Vatican warns against handing over human responsibility to AI. Technology must always be subjected to a "moral evaluation" in order to determine how it is used as a human being.
Pope approves guidelines
Two Vatican dicasteries - comparable to ministries - drafted the new guidelines. Pope Francis approved them and then released them for publication. The head of the Catholic Church repeatedly warns of the dangers of AI in public appearances and attempts to bring ethical concerns surrounding the technology to the fore.
