According to official reports, at least four people have been killed in a heavy airstrike on the Lebanese capital Beirut. 23 others were injured in the attack on a building in the densely populated Basta district, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

Lebanese security circles reported that the attack was aimed at a Hezbollah official. No further details were initially available.

Eyewitnesses reported that the heavy explosions had shaken the entire city. There was massive damage. Rescue work was ongoing. The attack occurred at around 4.00 a.m. (local time). According to the state news agency, an eight-storey building was completely destroyed in the attack.

No evacuation order for the residents

The Israeli military had not previously issued an evacuation order to the residents of the area hit. The residential area is not far from parliament and the Grand Serail government palace.

Israel's air force has been repeatedly attacking the southern suburbs of Beirut in several waves since Friday. According to eyewitnesses, there were also several attacks there this morning. The Israeli military had previously issued evacuation calls. The army spoke of attacks on weapons depots and "terrorist infrastructure" belonging to Hezbollah.

Many of the residents of the suburbs known as Dahija have already fled. Dahija is considered a Hezbollah stronghold.

The Israeli armed forces repeatedly attack targets in Lebanon. For its part, the pro-Iranian Shiite militia Hezbollah fires dozens of rockets at Israel every day. In total, more than 3,645 people have been killed in Lebanon since fighting began between Israel and Hezbollah over a year ago, according to the Ministry of Health. The count does not distinguish between civilians and fighters of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia.
