The Group of Seven Western industrialized nations (G7) has expressed hope for a peaceful and orderly transition following the fall of Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad. In a video conference, the heads of state and government called for a "comprehensive political process" for the former civil war country, as Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced in her capacity as acting G7 chairwoman. Assad has since fled to Russia.

At the same time, the G7 once again condemned Russia's attack on neighboring Ukraine. They deplored the increasing military cooperation between Russia and North Korea and expressed their intention to continue to take measures against actors who support Moscow's war efforts. The group also includes the USA, Canada, Japan, the UK, France and Germany.

In a joint statement, the G7 described the ceasefire in Lebanon as an "important step towards peace". They also reaffirmed their support for the US-backed plan for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which provides for the release of all Israeli hostages and more humanitarian aid for the civilian population. They named a two-state solution as their goal, i.e. two equal states for Israelis and Palestinians.
Italy still holds the presidency until the end of the year. Next year, it will be Canada's turn.
