From next March, drivers will be allowed to use autopilot on the highway and let go of the steering wheel. However, they must be ready to take control at any time if the system asks them to do so.

The Federal Council adopted a corresponding ordinance on Friday, which comes into force on March 1, as announced by the Federal Roads Office (Astra).

The ordinance also states that from this date, automated parking of a car will also be permitted without a driver inside the vehicle - but only in parking spaces and multi-storey parking lots defined for this purpose.

It will also be possible to use driverless vehicles on authorized routes. However, they must be monitored by an operator at a control center. If the vehicle is unable to resolve a situation itself, the operator should suggest a driving maneuver, for example.

The cantons are responsible for approving the routes. Driverless vehicles could be particularly attractive for the transportation of goods and on the last mile, writes the Federal Council. It also emphasizes that vehicles with automation systems require type approval. In addition, manufacturers must "comprehensively demonstrate" how road safety and traffic flow can be guaranteed.
