An articulated lorry caught fire in the Seelisberg Tunnel on the A2 on Friday morning. No one was injured. However, the nine-kilometre-long tunnel on the A2 freeway between Uri and Nidwalden was temporarily closed in both directions.

The Dutch articulated vehicle was traveling north, according to the Uri cantonal police on Friday. The vehicle caught fire around three kilometers after the tunnel portal.

The fire departments were able to extinguish the fire quickly. However, the fire caused extensive material damage. The cantonal police reported that the tunnel tube was being cleared and inspected for damage by employees of the Federal Roads Office Astra and other specialists.

The Seelisberg tunnel was temporarily closed in both directions during the fire-fighting work. The south tunnel has been open again since 8:30 a.m. and is to be operated in two-way traffic for the time being, as the cantonal police announced at midday.
